Help! I got lost in minecraft!?

I was looking for leather, and I was wandering all day, and then I realized I was lost. I wandered in one direction in hopes I would find my way back, but i hit unfamiliar territory. Then I built a bed to sleep out the night. After, I realized the bed reset my spawn, so I can't just kill myself. At one point, I found an area where I put some wood down before i got lost. I knew I was close, so I built a tower so I could see my house from above. But then I fell off. I died, and respawned AT THE OLD BED! I can't find my way back, and I had so much stuff left at my house, I can't just start over. Anyone know how I can get home? I have nothing but dirt in my inventory!
