What is an RPG campaign?

I've been looking at various maps on display in the Cartographers' Guild, and some of their authors say that they are settings for a 'campaign'. Could anybody please tell me what a campaign is? I looked it up on Wikipedia, but all I got for a definition was unfamiliar jargon. Any good answer would be appreciated.
