How can you completely spray paint a chain necklace?

I like to spray paint the chain I purchase at Michael's to match the pieces of jewelry I add to it. I can get most of it painted,but the parts of the chain that overlap do not get covered. I'm not sure how I can sufficiently paint the entire chain. I thought of painstakingly painting each piece and then putting it together,but in the reassembling process I would end up scraping off paint with my tools. Please help!
