Why does my catholic neighbor have to interrogate everyone at my parties?

He starts with normal questions that show his interest. But when the person answers, this leads to another question and that to another as if he's trying to get down to their root level of being. Then to top it off, after he's worked down sufficiently far, he makes a judgment type statement, usually either negative or completely patronizing.
